Edge Impact’s position on AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing how organisations work. It can help us work through large volumes of information, test ideas and improve some routine processes. It also raises questions about environmental, social, ethical and governance impacts. At Edge, how we use AI must support our vision to create a world where unsustainable is unthinkable.

We recognise that AI has a dual role in the sustainability transition. It can support better environmental and social outcomes, while its expansion increases demand for energy, water and resources. Our approach is to weigh its value against its impacts and potential efficiencies, make deliberate choices and evolve our position as the evidence develops.

Our position

Edge supports responsible, purposeful use of AI where it improves or creates efficiencies in our work. AI may assist our research, synthesis, analysis, drafting and quality checks. Every client deliverable remains the responsibility of Edge - our position, policy and team are enabled to ensure accuracy, reasoning, quality and impact.

Our safeguards

Protecting client information is the first test we apply to any use of AI. We use only tools Edge has assessed and approved. Approval requires enterprise terms under which information entered is not used to train the provider's models. Personal and sensitive information is not entered into AI tools and we respect every client's decision to restrict or prohibit the use of AI in their work.

Our process

Before using AI, we engage with our clients on their preferences. Our people consider whether it will improve the outcome, what information is involved and whether the use is proportionate to the benefit. Sometimes a conventional method, a calculation, an existing process or a conversation is the better tool. We encourage the lightest suitable approved approach and avoid unnecessary use of AI.

Our commitment

Clients trust us to combine science, strategy and storytelling with clear judgement. We use approved tools and follow our privacy, information security, confidentiality and intellectual property obligations. We consider the environmental and social record of providers, including disclosure about energy and water, supply chains, labour practices, training data, community impacts and sensitive end uses. When AI has a material role in analysis, recommendations, content or decision-making, or where a client would reasonably expect to know, we will be transparent about its use.

Our people

Our people are our greatest differentiator. Some tasks AI can accelerate are also tasks through which people learn. We are reviewing how to preserve strong foundations, especially for people early in their careers. As roles evolve, we will invest in professional development which is central to building a future-fit team and being a great place to work.

Our future

AI will rapidly change and our position will evolve as evidence becomes clearer. We will regularly review our tools, providers, policies and practices as the technology, regulation and expectations changes. We welcome collaboration between our people, clients and partners. Edge is committed to harnessing the power of AI to responsibly help us create the future we are striving for.
